This story has been revised several times from its inception in the spring of 1996 to its final form in late 1997. It is a story on how Evelyn discovered her powers and makes use of them to the present day.

The Origin of Evelyn Powers

Evelyn Powers was born in 1973 in Springvale, Maine. At the age of 8 her parents, Philip and Wendy, separated and she went to live with her father in Boston. In 1984 her parents attempted a reconciliation and got back together. But, in 1986 her parents again separated and then divorced. Her mother moved to Philadelphia while she remained with her father in Boston.

Until she turned 16, she was pretty much the picture postcard of a normal kid growing up. Then, not long after her 16th birthday an event occurred that changed her life. On a very cold February day in 1989, the car she was riding in with her three best friends skidded on some ice. The car went off an embankment and plunged through the ice into a pond. She momentarily went unconscious.

When she regained consciousness, the car was almost one-half filled with freezing water and filling fast. She could hear her friends screaming in the back seat. The driver had a gash on her forehead, was moaning, and was barely conscious.

For a moment she panicked. Somehow she managed to unfasten her seat belt. Afterwards she calmed down just enough to unwedge the driver from the steering wheel and pull her free. The car was almost filled with water and the freezing cold was taking its toll. Her body was numb and her lungs were aching from holding her breath. Her friends in the back seat were no longer screaming but she could hear them banging against the glass and doors, trying to get out.

With the numbing cold closing in and at the point of giving up she found something within her - a spark. The spark flashed over her entire being and she was no longer cold. Then there was a feeling, not a thought or a voice but a feeling, which said "everything will be all right." Light emanated from her hands, illuminating the interior of the car. She tried to open the door but it would not open. She kicked at it but it still would not budge. Finally, she punched it.

There was a deafening "clang" and she and the driver were yanked out by the outrush of water from the car. They made their way to the surface. Moments later the other friends surfaced. Later they would describe an incredible flash of light and roar of sound which shattered the glass windows in the back seat, thus allowing them to make their way out of the car and to the surface.

Fortunately, other motorists had stopped after witnessing the car plunging into the pond. As they were helping the girls to safety, Evelyn's sudden strength and warmth deserted her. She fainted. When she regained consciousness, she was at a local hospital. She and her friends fully recovered.

Over the next six months her appearance changed. Her eyes changed from blue to violet and her blonde hair became more golden. As the ugly duckling becomes a swan so did her plain looks become beautiful. Naturally, this did not go unnoticed. When she graduated she was one of the most popular girls in school. This attention led her into several relationships with the opposite sex but none lasted. Additionally, she tried modeling and absolutely hated it.

After high school, she enrolled in a junior college and completed her Associates Degree in 1994. In the summer of 1994 her mother, now running her own business in Hudson City, was in a terrible car accident. The ultimate prognosis was for full recovery but that process was going to take several months. Evelyn went to her mother's side.

During the time of her mother's recovery, she found employment at Stacey's Dojo working in the front office. Over the period of a couple of years, Evelyn proved to be very capable in the day-to-day operations of the dojo. Currently, she is Stacey's right hand woman and is involved in major decisions in the operation of the dojo.

She also became interested in Karate and decided to take classes. She was an extremely quick learner and excelled in the discipline. Over the same period of time she was becoming more involved in the business she advanced her belts. Evelyn currently has a first level black belt classification.

Working late one evening she heard a woman scream. The scream was coming from an alley behind the Dojo. She immediately dialed 911 on her cell phone but received a "please hold" message. As the screams became more insistent she became more agitated. Standing at the door to the alley, wondering what to do, she felt the spark once again within her. The spark raced to both her hands and formed a menacing glow. She smiled and opened the door.

She saw a man on top of an unconscious woman holding a knife to her throat. His pants were down and her dress was ripped open. The speed and suddenness of her attack caught the man by surprise. In a moment of rage she yanked the man off the woman. One martial punch with a glowing fist finished it and the man was instantly unconscious. Five minutes later the police arrived and took him into custody and an ambulance took the woman to the hospital.

When the police took her statement, Evelyn described the scenario minus her glowing fist. The man later confessed to the crime but did not remember anything after knocking the woman unconscious and later waking up in pain in police handcuffs. The woman had a vague recollection of a light in the sky but the police chalked it up to the trauma caused by the assault. Evelyn and Stacy's Dojo received a moment of recognition from the Hudson City Almanac (the local newspaper) and the dojo experienced a sudden surge of membership.

Since that time she's continued helping run the Dojo, practiced and learned to control her newfound ability, and furthered her training in Karate. She shares and apartment with a roommate and has 2 cats.
